too hot for food?

Hoping for some inspiration. Are beets inspiring?
Is it possible? Can it really ever be too hot to play with food? Somehow today, I cannot even bring myself to think about it with much pleasure. I can guarantee I'm not approaching the kitchen with one grain of creativity. How can that be?

I've been sitting here, well, maybe lying here, thinking about this for awhile now. Where's the excitement, the adventure, even just the promise of something wonderful to eat? I've thought sorbet, seafood salad, even hot peppers---nothing.

It's just that I usually live for this shit, to quote Sixteen Candles. This is new territory, unpleasant and most uncomfortable territory. So I am blaming the heat and whatever else I can think to blame because, frankly, it's getting a little scary.

Hopefully, tomorrow I'll be writing about herb gardens or pantries or cookware or fresh organic produce. Today, I cannot for the life of me think of anything that sounds good to cook, to eat, or to put in print.

Help!!

  2. Kristen, I do so wish salad sounded lovely. Sometimes it does. I have all sorts of wonderful ingredients in the house, too. I'll try to work up to it for tomorrow. I've put a piece of pacific halibut from Vital Choice Seafoods in the refrigerator to thaw. It's just that nothing at all sounds good---not even Champagne and caviar. Something is seriously amiss.

  3. I'm trying Kristen's idea today---a lovely salad. I started a bean salad before work with canned garbanzo and kidney beans, simmered frozen green beans, and mixed a simple vinaigrette with olive oil, red and white wine vinegars, and a splash of balsamic. Tossed them together with diced onion, sea salt, and pepper and left them to marinate. Tonight I'll add cucumbers, vine-ripened tomatoes, beets, and whatever else seems irresistable at the moment. It's so much easier to feel creative with favorite ingredients on hand, like Organic Girl's baby spring greens. They are my current favorite in the ready-to-eat category.
